Depending on where you stay and what you want to see, you may not even need to use the S and U bahn. Many of the sites of interest to tourists lie within walking distance of each other. If you look on Google maps, you can see that although the systems are quite useful to commuters, within the boundaries of the ring road, there is only one stop each for the S and U Bahn.

Tina, we got a 3-day ticket which was nice. Here's the link for info. It may not cover your Dachau trip, but it will cover you for the inner circles. Dachau shouldn't cost too much more...

Dachau is just outside the blue inner zone on the S2 line. That probably means the train to Dachau is not covered by the three-day ticket, but I do not remember for sure. The airport is also outside that inner zone. Everything else you'd want to see is within the zone. How much you would use a pass depends on what you want to see, where you are staying, and how much walking your family is up to.

The three day Tageskarte is just for the inner zone (Innenraum); if you wanted to go to Dachau, in the second zone it wouldn't work.

So, I would suggest this. If your hotel is within short walking distance of some of the venues (like Marienplatz, the Residenz, the art museums), plan one day without a "pass". If you want to go a little farther another day, maybe to Nymphenburg, get a Partner Innenraum Tageskarte (€9,00 for five people) for that day. On the day you want to go to Dachau, get a Muenchen XXL Partner Tageskarte (€11,80 for five)
