We are working on our travel plans for a 10 day trip to Austria this September. Thinking about traveling through the Hohe Tauern National Park. Has anyone done this trip, what were your experiences, and how much time should one plan for?
Hi Sue, That's not a lot to go on. What are your main interests? How do you plan to travel in Austria, rental car or public transportation? Where are you flying into/out of? Personally, I'd recommend flying into/out of Munich and basing a few nights in Zell am See and maybe a couple in the Zillertal and Salzburg area, not particularly in that order. Paul
Paul: I shouid have given more info. We are flying into Vienna, spending several days there, and then driving to Salzburg, where we plan to stat 3/4 nights. Originally we planned on driving from /salzburg to Innsbruck, but was doing some reading on the Hohe Tauern National Park, and particularly the Grossglockner road, so were thinking about changing the plans to include this area, and may'be dropping Innsbruck. We're not sure how much time to plan for the Park, and if it will be worth changing plans to see it. Our last leg involves taking a train from Munich to Paris. I'm more interested what people thought of the park etc. Thanks
Hi Sue, The area around the Hohe Tauern National Park is terrific. The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is worth driving. Zell am See would make a good place to stay in the area. For a smaller village to stay, Heiligenblut, at the southern end of the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, is gorgeous. Paul
Hi again, Just wanted to say I would drop Innsbruck for Zell am See. Actually, we're not fans of Innsbruck the city. The area is pretty, but there are so are many beautiful area's in Austria. Paul
