Travel from Vienna to Munich

We will be in Prague in September for 4 days then sailing on a riverboat from Passau to Budapest for 1 week. We are then taking the train from Budapest to Munich, stopping in between at Vienna and Salzburg. We will have been in Vienna for 2 full days on the riverboat cruise and we are wondering if that will be enough time for Vienna. We are interested in any other interesting towns/stops from Vienna to Salzburg to Munich. We will have already been in Salzburg for a day. We really don't want to repeat all the stops we did on the cruise, so we are looking for some other towns of interest on our way back to Munich to visit and stay overnight. Any suggestions would be helpful. We already have our rail pass. Thank you in Advance. Michele

On the way from Vienna to Salzburg, you could get off at Attnang-Puchheim and take the train down to Hallstatt. From Salzburg you can go by bus or train to Berchtesgaden. Between Salzburg and Munich, you could stop at Prien and see Herrenchiemsee.

I would also recommend Hallstat it's probably one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. During our trek from Vienna to Munich (by way of Salzburg), we also spent a night in Hall, a nice small town just east of Innsbruck.

Too bad about the rail pass - you really would have made out so much better with point to point tickets. Oh well. I actually drove from Munich to Vienna today and we stopped in Gmunden for the afternoon. The lake is beautiful with a lovely promenade. This is a well known center for Gmunden pottery. The beautiful Salzkammergut region is nearby and worth a day or two.
