I'm planning a trip to mainly Munich and Vienna in late May. We'd like to hit Salzburg either to or from, but I'm having trouble figuring out the most efficient way with travel times by train between the cities. Help? And, any suggestions on a hotel in Salzburg?
We stayed at Hotel Chiemsee both times we were in Salzburg and really enjoyed it both times. Most recent was about 2 years ago. Great location and very quaint. Easy to get to and good prices. www.sbg.at/hotel-chiemsee I don't know much about getting to and from Vienna, but we found the travel to and from Munich and Salzburg to be very easy, fast and cheap. If I remember right, it was only about an hour train ride between the two cities. Salzburg is totally worth it - have a great time!
MunichSalzburgVienna is a very easy-to-do vacation. All 3 cities are linked by efficient train service. It's about 3 1/2 hours from Salzburg to Vienna. As already noted, Munich is much closer, about an hour.
From Vienna to Salzburg try the new and cheaper rail line Westbahn: https://westbahn.at/ We took it last Christmas and it is much cheaper than OBB. Trip time is the same as OBB and you can purchase tickets right from the conductor on board. For a real treat in Salzburg stay at Hotel Auersperg: http://www.hotel-salzburg.net/en/ For a great meal in Salzburg go to Barenwirt (make a reservation) http://www.baerenwirt-salzburg.at/
Happy travels
My favorite way to travel this route is in a ÖBB RailJet train, which is also the fastest (I think). Salzburg is going to be a stop between Munich and Vienna no matter what train you take, so it's a perfect place to stop and stay a night or two. You can look up train times and purchase tickets in advance (for great deals) at bahn.com or http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp.
Trains work very well with these three cities. Munich: Mercure Alstadt Salzburg: Weisse Taube
Vienna: Pension Sacher
