We are driving from Frankfurt through Germany to Salzburg/Hallstatt and considered dropping the car before we travel into Venice. 1. Has anyone driven from this area into Venice? 2. Has anyone taken the train from this area into Venice?
Would you do either of these modes of transportation in this region again ??
Hallstatt is a little out of the way. DB shows only one connection daily and it gets into Venice at 3 am. There is a thru Euronight train out of Salzburg at 1:30 am arriving 8:30. Driving and parking in Mestre is looking better and better.
What city are you flying out of? When are you travelling? If you return the car in Austria or Italy, you will pay drop off fees because you are returning the car in a different country. You can check AutoEurope online for prices for different scenarios. If you decide to take the train to Venice, drop the car off in Germany across the border from Salzburg. Rosenheim is one option. Call AutoEurope directly to find a town closer to Salzburg. We have driven from Venice to Salzburg on several occasions using a different route each time. It is beautiful. On one trip, we drove from Venice to Hallstatt and then on to Salzburg. On googlemaps you can see that you go thru Villach. We stopped in that area for one night and then continued on to Hallstatt. The mountains and valley are gorgeous. Then from Hallstatt to Salzburg you are on smaller roads, however, it is also breathtaking. Allow enough time to drive through this area.
Thanks for the advice ! We just didn't want to take the train - to save drop off fees in another country - and have someone say that the drive through the Dolomites was amazing !
