Travel from Nice to Venice on the train

It is an 8 hour trip I believe from nice to Venice,. Is it best to take the night train and save a day for sightseeing and do you have to booke for the overnight trains? Thanks

I tried to send an email reply but it didn't work...

I would definitely take the night train. Although it isn't the most romantic thing (bunk beds), we had a little picnic in our room (food purchased in the local markets), drank a little wine, had a good night sleep and woke up to a new day of adventure.
