Travel from Munich to Berchesgarten

I am staying at the King's First Class hotel in Munich and would like to spend a day in Berchesgarten. What is the best mode of transportation and where located from the hotel. I plan to see Eagles Nest. Any other things to see or do in the area?

Depending upon your departure time, you can choose from several routes. All will involve connections. Some are train only and some are train plus bus. For detailed timetables and fares, see the German Rail site. Note correct spelling: Berchtesgaden.

A month ago, I would have been very down on you for not knowing the correct spelling of Berchtesgaden. However, after a few days in Prague, where I could not tell one streets from another (seems they were all "Na" something), I might sympathize with not spelling German places correctly........ Nah. German names are too straightforward. You should still spell it correctly - Berchtesgaden. A few years ago, the German Rail website was very inflexible as to spelling. Ask for Fussen, and you would get bus stops for Fussen Str. all over Germany, but not Füssen. Now they have added an "ignorance algorithm, and if you type "Berchesgaden", which is a non-existent place, it will suggest Berchtesgaden. For most people, I would suggest buying a Bayern-Ticket Single for €22 for 2nd class and taking an RE from Munich Hbf to Freilassing, catching the first BLB train south from Freilassing to Berchtesgaden, then catching the first bus from Berchtesgaden Hbf to the start point for the special buses to the Eagles Nest. To return, reverse the process, all for €22 if in one day. However, for someone staying in the King's **** First Class Hotel in Munich, I'm sure mixing with the riff-raff on regional trains in 2nd class would be below you. Most Bahn connections to Berchtesgaden show an express train to Salzburg and the RVO bus from there to Berchtesgaden, but that requires a bus, which I am sure you don't want to do. You could also take a regional express to Freilassing and then the BLB regional train to Berchtesgaden, but that would require riding on regional trains.

Just a thought, it's hard to find on the Bahn schedule from Munich to Freilassing, but there is an IC, maybe called the Alpine Express, that starts in Hamburg and goes south through Germany, stopping in Munich Ost from 14:06 - 14:12, then on to Berchtesgaden at 16:57. From Freilassing to Berchtesgaden, it goes as RE 2083, but it is still the same Intercity train. There is a return trip leaving Berchtesgaden at 8:36, turning into an IC in Freilassing and going to Munich Ost at 11:15. That would require you to stay overnight in Berchtesgaden. There is a 4* Hotel in Berchtesgaden, the Edelweiss, but it is up the hill a ways from the Hbf. There are buses, but again ...., and the walk is rather strenuous on a dirt path. I haven't seen taxis, but there might be. Round trip, first class fare would be €112, less than a night at the King's hotel.

Hey Lee, Finding it hard to answer Dan without insults? Why bother if his post annoys you so much? Just pass it by. Paul

Just for clarification, Kings has two motels in Munich. King Center and Kings First Class. First Class is the name, not the quality of the room.

Hi Dan, Check out Konigsee boat trip and the Jennerbahn cable car. Both are basically next to each other and about 5 min. from Berchtesgaden. There's a Salt Mine tour also. Lee's remarks were uncalled for regardless. Very inappropriate. Paul

Dan - I think it all depends on your definition of "best." Do you mean least costly? Fastest? Most relaxing? Best sightseeing along the way? Taking a train is fine, but if you prefer driving, you will find the road down to the Berchtesgaden area is an easy day-trip. There are multiple rental agencies right in the center of Munich. There are other things to do in that area, like doing the famous salt mine tour, or taking a ride on the nearly lake. The center of Berchtesgaden is picturesque as well, and worth a stop to walk around for a little while.
