Travel from Halstatt to Munich

Does anyone have any advice on the best/most economical way to two audults to travel from Halstatt to Munich? Should I buy rail tickets from Halstatt to Salzburg, then a Bayern-ticket? Understand there is no manned train window at Halsatt, so need to either buy in advance or on the train. Does a Bayern ticket only work when travel initiates in Munich, i.e. can I buy it in Salzburg?

According to the timetables at www.bahn.de, the fastest way from Hallstatt to Munich is via Salzburg. There is a DB ticket office at the Salzburg station and you can buy a Bayern-Ticket there.

Small point. The ticket office was closed when I was there a couple years ago. There was a ticket machine, which certainly works as well and does not take coffee breaks. The Bayern-Ticket was a clear choice on the machine.

I was't 100% certain there was a ticket machine so I didn't mention it. However, besides not taking coffee breaks, the machine is generous. It will charge you less for your Bayern-Ticket than will a person at a ticket window.

For 2-5 people, you can get a Einfach Raus ticket for 28 EURO. It works just like a Bayern-ticket - only for regional trains in Austria. So far in my travel from Salzburg to Bad Ischl to Hallstatt to Hall, every ÖBB ticket automat I have seen sells both the Einfach Raus ticket AND the Bayern-Ticket, but I´m sure you can also use an automat in the Salzburg station.

So, does she purchase a Bayern ticket for the German train and then the Einfach ticket for the Austria train. I might also be traveling part of this route, Munich to Salzburg, late October.

You can use the Bayern-Ticket alone for Munich to Salzburg. You only need the Einfach ticket if you are going some place further in Austria. Salzburg is stop on both the Austrian and German Rail Systems.

As I understand this question, she will be going from Hallstatt to Munich. The Einfach-Raus Ticket covers regional train travel in Austia. The Bayern-ticket will cover Salzburg to Munich.

I actually stayed in Lahn, in the southern part of Hallstatt, so I bused in from Bad Ischl and out to Obertraun since the Hallstatt bus terminal is in Lahn. Therefore, I didn't see the Hallstatt train station. The station in Obertraun did not have a ticket automat, but it was manned. If the Hallstatt station is unmanned, it should have an automat. I saw an automat in Bad Ischl, and it sold both the Einfach-Raus ticket and the Bayern-Ticket.

Lee,

Two different questioners, both named Denise. I suspect they did it just to confuse us.

Denise,

Based on my own experience, I'd suggest that you purchase your tickets for the trip from Hallstatt to Munich before you head for Hallstatt. That way you'll have all the details sorted.

I assume you'll be travelling there by rail? As noted in previous posts, the small station at Hallstatt is "unmanned" (not sure if they ever staff it?). You'll walk down a small hill to the boat dock and board Stefanie for the short trip across the lake (€1 per person as I recall).

On the trip both to and from Hallstatt, you'll change trains in Attnang-Pucheim. You might want to have a look at the trips on the bahn.de website just to get some idea on the departure/arrival times of the trains on that route.

Hope you have a fantastic time in Hallstatt! I hope to return there soon.
