Greetings,
I will be traveling with 3 other middle aged women to Spain. We tend to pack too much into our travels as our time is limited. We are trying to decide whether to spend a day driving (thinking that it may be interesting and scenic) or taking an overnight train as not to waste a precious day. Cost is a factor but time may trump cost on this trip. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Pam
Thoughts. If not time wealthy I am suggesting you fly with vueling.com The car journey is, if direct route, eight hours plus without stop and much along a built up coastline with little site of the sea. The train journey - what is your experience of overnight journeys? Do you think you will be fresh enough for site seeing the following day?
Fly, then. The cities are far apart and night trains from Renfe are NOT like the modern, comfort, futuristic AVE but rather crap rolling stock 20 years old or more.
Thanks for the input. All the trains we have traveled on have been pleasant but we have no experience with an overnight. I am not crazy about flying but it may be the best option.
You could take a daytime train, which would take about the same travel time as driving. One train from Granada to Madrid ( 4.5 hours) and then the fast AVE to Barcelona (2.5 hours). If you buy the tickets 2 months ahead to get the Web fares, it would be about 75 euros (28 from Granada to Madrid, and 47 from Madrid to Barcelona.).
