you shouldnt have to go back to madrid from granada. it would take you between 4-5.5 hours by bus (depending on the route), and maybe just about 4 hours by car. the trains in spain are a million times more expensive than taking a bus (sometimes 5-6 times the cost), but are more comfortable if cost is not an issue. as for being scenic, most of spain is scenic. really. i've bussed all over (valladolid, segovia, santander, bilbao, salamanca, madrid, cordoba, and merida) and its just a beautiful country. especially in the south. if you drive, you have the advantage of taking a coastal route (though it would be more tiring, as its more curvy) but it will take you longer. my pick??? i'd take the bus. you'll get there quickly, not have to worry about a rental car, and see a lot of the country. any questions, just ask!

6 daytime buses a day between Granada and Alicante, from 4.5 to 6.5 hours, depending on which one you catch. Lovely scenery en-route, and only 26 Euro, one-way. Check out schedules and prices at www.movelia.es. It's a fairly large bus station in Granada, just west of the downtown tourist areas, and city bus #3 will take you right there...I think the fare is one Euro. Remember, buses in Spain have assigned seating....and they don't have on-board washrooms, but they stop very 2 hours or so...so don't down a lot of coffee before you depart!
