My wife and I will be traveling in the Benelux countries in the middle of April and in France until the middle of May. Is it cheaper to drop off our car (rented and dropped off in Haarlem, Holland) and travel to Bayreux, France via train or keep the car and drive to Bayreux and rent a car there for our trip to the Loire Valley for a week?
Joanne is right. If you pick up a car in one country and drop it off in another, you will have to pay a hefty drop-off fee. While there is a car rental outlet in Bayeux, the hours are limited and it's nowhere near the train station. Caen is a better pick up point.
I think it will probably be much cheaper and easier to rent and drop off in the same country, rather than pick-up your car in Holland and drop it off in France. Even thought the highways in that part of Europe are very well maintained and the signage is very clear, it is probably much more relaxing to just take the train.
Your best bet would probably be to pick-up you car in Caen, rather than Bayeux (I'm not sure if there is a car rental depot in Bayeux). There are a number of car rental agencies right outside the train station in Caen.
