Travel between Barcelona and Madrid

What is the cheapest way to travel between Barcelona and Madrid? I assume a bus is cheaper but I also have to look at the time it will take. I don't want to spend more than $100 rt. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I took a flight on Spanair from Madrid to Barcelona for around 40 euro. I think they have one from Barcelona to Madrid as well. Be advised the carry on weight is 8 kilos we had to check our bags but didn't have any problems.
