Is that transportation to your destination, or just local transportation when there?

I just got back from 12 days (11 nights) in Central Europe. Not including airfare, I spent $1,450, including a few inexpensive souvenirs. My first 4 nights were in Budapest, at a 3-star hotel with a full breakfast, then 3 nights in Vienna at the 5-star Intercontinental and 4 nights at the 5-star Hilton, both obtained by bidding on priceline, so no breakfast, but at $104 in Vienna and $81 in Prague a night I could afford to eat out. All the rooms were doubles.

I took the train from city to city and flew open-jaw. 3 hours from Budapest to Vienna, then 4.5 hours to Prague.

I can't wait to go back. The cities are all different and all beautiful. Next time, I want to do day trips to Salzburg, Dresden, and Brno. On your budget you could probably rent a car to visit these places. Czech Air (not sure of the exact name) usually has bargain prices, too.

Hmmm...think I would rent a villa in Umbria or possibly Perugia. Along with a car too. Stay the entire month in one area, living local

Hi Jill,

If this does not include your airfare and you are looking at 2/3 weeks even with a car this should be no problem. Of course I use pensions not 5 star hotels. That would also, for me, cover food, souvenirs and sites. I would fly in/out of Munich and do many places in southern/south-eastern Germany and north/north-eastern Austria. It would help to know your transportion plans, interests and if you do mean the whole month of September.

Hi,

After 6 trips to Bavaria/Austria/Dolomites the last 9 years, we spend less than $4,000 per trip for 2 adults including airfare, car, everything. Our trips are usually 10 to 12 nights. We stay in family run pensions, etc. outside of cities which helps keep the costs down.

To answer your question, I'd suggest Bavaria and Austria. Fly into/out of Munich.

Assuming a 2 week stay, car rental or some train, lodging and airfare from AZ I would plan on France or Germany. Select airports have better fares as Frankfurt or Geneva (can actually be less than Paris CDG). Yearly I have no prob in summer on $100/day in France or Germany however Italy, GB, Northern Europe would be more alot expensive. Good that you are plannning for Sept. (shoulder season).

I vote for Switzerland, Austria, and southern Germany
