Anyone have any advice on the cheapest traveling options between the above cities in the same order? I'm starting to get a little worried. Ticket prices have doubled since the last time I checked last week. Dates: Leave Berlin Jun 30th (thur) Leave Prague July 3rd (sun) Leave Munich July 5th (tues)
Any help would be much appreciated.
Rail pass of would be your best bet.
How many people. Fares unless otherwise noted are advance purchase online from the Bahn. For Jun 30 Berlin to Prague, I see 1 train @ €58 for two, 3 trains at €68 for 2. For Jul 3 Prague to Munich, I see bus to Nürnberg + train to Munich @ €68 for 2. All-rail connections are €49 for two, no adv purchase reqd. Jul 5 Munich to FRA. I see all ICE for €109 for 2. If you are willing to take a little slower IC/EC, €49 for 2. Max for 3 legs, €245 ($350. $175 per person). Germany-Czech Saver pass is only available for 5 days @ $602 for two
Thanks for the replies. It will be two of us traveling. It's also our first time going to Europe. I saw those trains you mentioned on the bahn site. I was hoping I could find something cheaper. Do train ticket prices fluctuate like airline tickets do?
Also, would renting a car be an advisable alternative for someone who's never been?
"I was hoping I could find something cheaper. " Don't we all. We spend $5 driving around to find a station that saves us $2 on gas. Actually, for those distances, $175 per person for three legs of travel isn't too bad. "Do train ticket prices fluctuate like airline tickets do? " No, these Sparpreis tickets for a particular train start at their lowest prices and only go up as the lower priced tickets sell out. If you search around, you might find lower fares on different dates (some days of the week are more popular and sell out sooner).
Thanks again Lee. I just came to the realization that the prices I was looking at on the bahn site and even the post you made above included two people. I panicked thinking we would have to fork over $300 each. Sorry for missing that, but wow, what a relief. Prost
Na zdraví
It isn't that the Bahn prices fluctuate due to the season or fuel prices, it is just that the cheap tickets go first, and the closer you get to your travel date, the more expensive they will be. Tickets can be purchased 90 days in advance and from then on, the prices will get progressively higher. Get your tickets now!
When those ticket go on sale 92 days in advance, they would be at the lowest tier, €58, €58, and €49, respectively, for 2 people, €165 total for all three legs. I'm not sure how long the lowest fares last on the first two legs, but for Munich to Frankfurt for Sept 13, today is the first day of sales for the date, and most trains no longer have the €49 fare available.
