My sisters and I will be in Paris for 4 days. We plan on walking a lot but have trips planned that will require metro or bus - not sure which one or how! How do I purchases tickets for multiple stops? What is the best way to purchase tickets or passes?i don't want to worry about buying a ticket every time I get off or on.
Buy a carnet (or two) of 10 tickets for use on the Metro or buses for 12.50 Euros at a Metro Station - makes more sense for you than buying a pass.
You use one ticket to get on the metro and then you transfer as needed to get to your final destination. Same for the bus (assuming you don't cross zones). You cannot use the same ticket to transfer from bus to metro or vice versa. I recommend you get a guide book and read about the transportation system to help you understand it better.

With your short stay and your plan to do a lot of walking, buying ten-ticket carnets as needed and sharing the tickets is definitely your best option. The current price for a carnet is €12.70. A ticket is good anywhere the Metro goes (some lines end in zone 3) and on the RER in zone 1 (all of central Paris) and it provides unlimited transfers until you exit the system. A ticket is good for bus transfers up to 90 minutes after boarding the first bus. A ticket is good on the Montmartre funiculaire that goes up the hill to Sacre-Coeur. Each time you use a ticket, be sure to keep it until you exit the Metro/RER system. For a zoomable map of the Metro/RER system, go here: http://tinyurl.com/6xmvms4.
