Not sure why you'd need a car once in Germany. Are you returning to Italy? If not, you'll pay hundreds of dollars in drop-off fees for a car if you pick one up there. Plus rental fees, gas, and incidentals. I'd use the train. But that's a very long train journey. I'd either change my itinerary - pay a visit to the Säntis peak in Switzerland, not far from Lake Constance... http://spass-muss-sein.ch/ausflug/images/stories/saentis/saentis_von_oben.jpg Ride the lift up: http://www.saentisbahn.ch/en.html ...or on Lake Constance itself (visit Mainau, Lindau, Konstanz, Meersburg) or both - or break up the long journey to Garmisch in this area with an overnight stop. I see a savings fare of 212€ for 4 adults at 11:10 between Milan and Radolfzell (on Lake Constance) at the German railways itinerary page: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en From Radolfzell, you can proceed to Munich or Garmisch on a group daypass (Quer Durchs Land ticket, 60€ for 4) using the regional trains.
