I am going on a ski trip to Innsbruck from February 27 through March 7 2010 and want to take a day trip or a 1 night overnighter to Trento / Mattarello. Is there public transportation? Better to rent a car and drive? What about road conditions that time of the year. Thank you.
Train would be best, and scenic, too.
It is a 2.5 to 3.5 hour ride, depending on which train. With some you need to change trains in Bolzano/Bozen, or there is a direct train also. Check the times on www.bahn.de. You won't be able to put in the 2010 dates yet, but schedules don't change much. You can check the Italian train website www.trenitalia.com. It looks like the direct train is 15 Euro for a 2nd class ticket, one way.
