How do we get from the Gare du Nord train station to our hotel in the Rue Cler area by public transportation? Or, is taking a taxi our best option?
Take Metro line 4 (direction Porte d'Orleans) to Strasbourg-St Denis. Transfer to Metro line 8 (direction Balard) and take it to either La Tour Maubourg or Ecole Militaire (whichever is closer to your hotel).
For a zoomable map of the Metro & RER system, go here.
Just look at the Metro map. If I remember correctly, the Metro station closest to Rue Cler is Ecole Militaire. The area around Gare du Nord isn't exactly Paris' finest, so don't worry about missing any scenery. Most of the sites of interest you are likely to pass above ground you'll probably see throughout your stay in Paris. Also, Rue Cler is rather distant from Gare du Nord to take a taxi.
If you have lots of luggage and more than 2 people , take a taxi for sure. Realize once you get to (Rue Cler) Ecole Miltaire metro stop you will have to walk a few blocks to find your hotel on rue cler. Sometimes a taxi fare is worth it.
Clara,
I normally use the Metro, as it's quick and isn't normally subject to "traffic problems", which can affect Taxis (and increase the bill). I had no trouble on the Metro with my Backpack and Camera bag, but if you have a huge amount of luggage you may be more comfortable with a Taxi.
Ecole Militaire is indeed the closest stop to Rue Cler, and it's not a long walk to many Hotels (which Hotel are you staying in?). It's a great area and I intend to return there on my next trip to Paris.
Have a look at the Metro map in Tim's link, to familiarize yourself with the routes and changes (it's very easy to figure out). Another option would be to use the No. 4 as previously suggested, but transfer to the No. 8 line (direction Balard) at Gare d l'Est.
Happy travels!
Thanks!
Taking the metro when you have luggage is a bit of a pain, or a very large pain if you have lots of luggage. Behind the Gare du Nord you can board Bus No. 42 (it is the terminal for that line and so you will be boarding an empty bus with your baggage) and get off the bus at the Champs de Mars. You can buy a ticket from the driver. At Champs de Mars take a cab to your hotel, as it would be rather a long walk. The ride on the 42 passes lots of Paris' spots, an added bonus to the euros you will save !
To avoid possible confusion I need to correct one thing in Ken's post. Gare de l'Est is NOT on Metro line 8.
Thank you for all your helpful advice!
I just did this a month ago and was surprised at how simple it was even though it was my first time in Paris. I did exactly what Tim's post said, and I did have luggage with me. It was easy! Have fun!!
