I will be visiting Berlin, Prague, Munich, & Paris this fall. I'm looking for tips on getting from the airport or train station to the hotel. Having not been to Europe since the late 70's while in the military your advice will be helpful. Is it best to take a taxi or some other mode of transportation? If by taxi, what can I expect for rates, are they metered or have a flat rate from pickup point to destination?
The last time I rode a taxi in Germany was 1988. Now, I always plan my accommodations to be within walking distance of public transportation. In major cities, it's hard to find a place that isn't within a few blocks of a transit stop.
Ummm....what airport?
Can't give any advise on Berlin and Prague, but there is a train that runs from the Munich airport to the city center. I recommend googling the airport names and seeing what type of transportation options they offer, most if not all have a wide array of public transport options.
I hope you have a RS Germany guide book, if not, you should get one as it is full of useful information for you (even if some folks here do not like RS guide books). I am going to Berlin in August and found lots of useful information in the Germany book such that I did not get his Berlin book.
When I was in Paris I got off the plane and followed the signs to the subway. Here is a URL to a map of the subway lines for Paris. http://mappery.com/maps/Paris-Metro-Map.gif. The subway from the airport is in the top right corner. Charles de Gaulle Aeroport. The subway travel in Paris was quite easy and fun. You could use Google earth or Mapquest to type in the address of your hotel and then us the map to find which line and stop is close to your hotel. Another option would be to call or email your hotel and ask what subway stop they are near. Sometimes the hotel's web site will have that information.
From Munich there is both a Lufthansa bus and trains that run to Munich main railway station. You will find many discussions on this site regarding trains and busses from Charles De Gaulle airport to Paris. With many opinions on which is better. check these out. Both methods will get you into these two City centers with less hassle and cost than a taxi- although taxis are available if that makes you more comfortable
Dennis, The answer to your questions will depend to some extent on which area of each city your Hotel is located in and how you'll be arriving in each city? It would be a really good idea if you could have a look at the RS Guidebooks for each city (perhaps at your local Library). These provide really good information on local transportation. You could also check the websites for whichever Hotels you're using, as they often have directions for reaching the Hotels from the airport or stations. Some specific comments on each city.... > Berlin - assuming you're arriving by train, you should be able to use the S-Bahn to reach the general area of your Hotel. > Prague - there are two main stations and depending on which one you're arriving at, the best method may be Metro or Taxi. > Munich - if you're arriving at the airport, take the S-Bahn to Munich Hbf. From there it's easy to get just about anywhere in the city via U-Bahn. A Taxi may be an option depending on where your Hotel is located. In my experience, not all of the Taxi drivers there are able to function in English, so you may want to have a small note prepared with the name and address of your Hotel, as that will avoid confusion. > Paris - are you arriving by rail? There are about six stations, so your best travel methods will depend. If you're arriving by air, which airport (there are three - CDG, ORY, BVA). If you're arriving at CDG, the RER "B" and Metro is about the quickest method to reach anywhere in the city. It has the advantage of not being affected by traffic. With more specific information, it would be easier to offer more specific suggestions. Happy travels!
