We will be arriving Avignon TGV on a Saturday evening in October at 6:20 P.M. and would like to a) rent a car - is it possible to pick up our rental car at or after that time of night b)if car rental is not possible, what are the bus/train schedules? c)if Saturday night travel is not possible, what are the early Sunday morning options? Are car rental agencies open on Sunday?

Shelley: I googled Hertz for Avignon-TGV and found that the branch there is open 8 am to 20:30 (8:30 pm) Saturday as well as some Sunday hours. You can check the other major car rental companies, but it doesn't appear there will be any problem. The Avignon TGV car rental is a huge, airport-like operation in an enormous parking lot with many companies present.

We just rented from Hertz a couple weeks ago at the Avignon TGV station. We picked it up on a Sunday morning, no problems. They were not only open, but busy. I suspect their competitors were open too. Avis, National, & Europcar all have offices there. One tip: if you're going to be driving around Provence, either bring a GPS from home (be sure to download the map of France first), or get one from the rental company.
