Hi, I'm looking for any information on traveling between Zurich and Hohenems, Austria. Are there local trains or buses? I'd like to leave Zurich in the morning and return late on the same day. Friday the 20th. Is this possible on public transport? Thanks for any help!

You can do it by train with one reasonable connection in Bregenz, or lesser connections with up to three changes. A good choice outbound might be Zürich HB dep 09:16 platform 13 EC 193 Bregenz arr 10:53 platform 3 Transfer time 21 min.
dep 11:14 platform 4 S-Bahn Line 1, Direction: Schruns Hohenems arr 11:38 Go to the bahn website for details on earlier and later trains, and for your return train.

As Nigel says, a great site for researching train schedules and connections is the Bahn (German rail) site, using Rick's tutorial: https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/online-schedules. The Bahn site won't have prices for trains that don't start or end in Germany. For that, you can use Swiss Rail: http://tinyurl.com/mc7g322 and Austrian Rail: http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp
