Transportation Aosta to Chamonix

Could anyone offer some advice about taking the train from Italy to Chamonix. The maps show a Gap in train route between Aosta to Chamonix. We see some bus service but would like some advice if anyone on this forum has made this trip. Thanks! Bill NJ

There is no direct train service fro Aosta to Chamonix. (no train tunnel through Mount Blanc). You would take a bus to Martigny (in Switzerland then a regional train (spectacular views) to Chamonix (although the schedule shows a change of trains, its the same train, the train number changes when you enter France from Switzerland. As there is a motor vehicle tunnel, from CourMayer to Chamonix, you can take a Savda bus from Aosta to Chamonix.

Well, I think the thing to do would be to take the cable car one way over Mt. Blanc.

I've never done this but have actively fantasized about it.

Cable-car rides are a kind of a splurge but if you are actually in Aosta it almost makes sense. And what a way to enter Chamonix!

Thank you for the replies! All great ideas. We thought about the cable car route but we would have to time our arrival. Still a great idea. Bill

I like the cable car idea also but when there in May 2007 it was closed from the Italian side. It was open in Chamonix for going up to the Aiguille du Midi. You could take a bus to Chamonix if the cable car does not work for you.

No matter what you do, confirm locally that your plans will work. My sister and I got to Aosta in 2001 and got on a train we had been told (not locally, but by an Italian train guy elsewhere) would take us to a bus to get us to Chamonix. We got to the end of the line (we were the only ones left on the train), and the train conductor took pity on us, helping us understand there was no way to get to Chamonix from there. We had to take the train all the way back to Aosta and then Turin. It was a huge waste of time, and I still haven't made it to Chamonix!

Thanks for sharing that experience. Exactly the kind of snag I wish to avoid. From the scenes as shown on Ricks DVD of Chamonix its a place we really want to go. We looked at the bus schedules and in 2009 there are some bus options and the Train option from Martigny sounds like a fun way to get there too. Anyway I appreciate the advice!
