I will be leaving Switzerland Aug.1 (National Swiss Day). I would like to spend that last night in Luzern and take a train to the airport to catch my 11:30am flight out of Zurich. Will there be an issue with the trains on this national holiday. Should I stay in Zurich that night? Thanks
I have been in Switzerland on Swiss Nat'l Day and transportation was not an issue. If there is any way you can actually stay an extra day in order to be there Aug. 1st, it is well worth it. If you stay in one of the communities that line the Zurichsee you will be rewarded with spectacular displays of fireworks and bonfires all around the lake. Many of the towns (like Erlenbach) put on song & dance performances (free) to add to your entertainment.
If you must depart on Aug. 1st, there shouldn't be a problem leaving from Luzern.
I agree with Tim on this - no problems at all on the national holiday. I was travelling from Gimmelwald to Interlaken to Spiez to catch a night train on the evening of August 1, and every single bus, gondola, and train ran on the same schedule as if it were any other day.
In our train travels on Swiss National Day, we have found that the schedules are unchanged and the trains are not any more crowded than normal. This was for travel during the morning of that day.
On the other hand, travel toward or through Zürich on the day of the Love Parade is to be avoided if at all ppossible!
