I am traveling from Zurich to Milan in late February. I have a full day to get from one to the other, but will have a decent sized suitcase with me (as I will be between a week of work in Switzerland and then two days in Milan before returning to the USA). I'm trying to determine the best way to make the most of my day through the Alps. Is there a better alternative to simply taking a mid-day EC train from Zurich to Milan? Are there special trains I should consider, and any places along the way worthy of a stop (keeping in mind I need to be in Milan by night, so only for a few hours). Any advice would be welcome! All of the tour books I have found are very vague about Ticino... all say it's beautiful, but stop short of providing enough guidance as to whether or not it's worth a stop anywhere along the route. Also, I'm not sure how the train works (with compulsory reservations... I presume I'd need to plan ahead of any stops en route?) Thanks!
