We plan to travel from Prague to Berchtesgaden and I was checking trian schedules. I have never done this before. One of the transfer times was 6 minutes. Is that really doable? How difficult is it getting off one train and finding your next train? Are the signs in the stations understandable to Americans?
6 minutes is usually enough time. It's just a matter of walking from one platform to the next. Just follow the numbers.
It's not unusual to have such short transfer times. You are probably talking about the transfer at Freilassing, a very small station where a transfer can be done in such a short time. Just be ready to hop off the train with your luggage as soon as you enter the station.
The transfer times are probably doable, but if it makes you too nervous, there are probably other options. If you use the Deutsche Bahn website to look for options, there is an option to search for longer connection times. I use this a lot, because those short transfer times do make me nervous! Doing this does sometimes mean waiting unnecessarily long in small train stations with not much to see or do.
In looking at some schedules, I only saw on place where there was a 6 min change, from track 5 to track 1 in Freilassing. Six minutes should be enough time, but don't stay seated until the train comes to a stop; this is not an airplane. Know the schedule, the stops, and at what times, and before you arrive in Freilassing, get up, collect your luggage, and move to the end of the car so you can get off when the train stops. Locate the stairs to the connecting tunnel (other passengers will be headed to it), go down the stairs, look for a big number one sign on the side of the tunnel, and go up those stairs to the platform. Just stay with the herd, the conductor will be on the platform and is not going to release the train while people are getting on. Here, www.stationsdatenbank.bayern-takt.de/StationsdatenbankBEG/Steckbrief.html?lang=de&efz=8000108, is the station plan for Freilassing. Note: use the stairs directly in front of the station building. There are a set of stairs on platform 5 at the far east end (in the direction of Salzburg), but that tunnel does not connect to platform 1. And, BTW, if you miss that connecting train, there is another one in an hour.
