Fellow travelers, I will be in Munich in mid-July and will then travel to Ochsenhausen, a small town about 1.5 hours west of Munich. I will be in Ochsenhausen for two days to visit friends before returning to Munich. There is no train service to Ochsenhausen. The closest station is Memmingen, about 25 minutes from Ochsenhausen. I am trying to decide whether to take the train from Munich to Memmingen and then renting a car for the drive to Ochsenhausen, returning it to Memmingen, and taking the train back to Munich. It is cheaper to rent a car in Munich for the entire trip rather than paying round-trip train fare plus a car rental. My concern, though, is about possible traffic and driving issues in Munich. I normally use only public transit in European cities and do my driving in the rural areas. I will appreciate any thoughts about how difficult or easy it is to drive from Munich, especially getting out of the downtown area. I will be staying near the City train station. Thanks. Gary Simms

You can get from Memmingen to Ochsenhausen and back on the 250 bus. The schedule is at: http://www2.ochsenhausen.de/docs/busfahrplan_mm__ochsenhausen__bc_2007_0.pdf
"It is cheaper to rent a car in Munich for the entire trip rather than paying round-trip train fare plus a car rental." You can do the whole train trip to Memmingen for 22€ with a BAYERN TICKET - this daypass includes buses and trains. The bus to Ochsenhausen shouldn't cost much.
Driving out of Munich from the train station is no big deal. The nightmare would be driving around within Munich and looking for parking. I've driven through Ochsenhausen. Quite a nice town. I haven't toured the monastery, but from the outside, it looks stunning. There's also a heritage Eisenbahn that you can ride.
