In the 2012 Rick Steves book about Spain, it says that there are trains hourly from Madrid to Avila, & 7 trains/day from Madrid to Salamanca. Yet, on the Rail Europe website, it says there are no trains between Madrid & Salamanca, & only 1 per day each way between Avila & Madrid. Could this decrease in trains be due to the economic problems in Spain? Or am I doing something wrong? I am able to find trains between other Spanish cities on the Rail Europe website. Thanks!
What you are doing wrongs is using Rail Europe for scheduling information. Rail Europe is a travel agency selling rail ticket to a limited number of trains. Use Bahn.de for schedule information or the Spanish rail site of Renfe.com. Also know that the rail system in Spain is not as extensive as in other European countries so you will not always find rail connection between all cities. But the bus system is terrific is always much cheaper than the train and sometimes faster.
You may find buses to be the better option. Spain has limited train service. The buses run from everywhere to everywhere, often faster than trains. They look like new charter busses. I don't have a link to schedules but they are cheap and convenient - reservation/advance booking isn't necessary.
