trains

We would like to fly into Zurich from the USA and take trains from Zurich to northern Italian cities like Milan and other cities in northern Italy that you would recommend. We like the first class trains. If you are going to travel all that way we want to be comfortable or we would rather not go. We will probably fly out of Milan back to the USA. Any suggestions would be great.

You should go to Turin and Genoa before heading to Milan before your departure.

Thank you for your reply. Have you been to Cinque Terre and if so would you recommend visiting it along with your suggestions such as Genoa and Turin. Thanks again for your help. Carol

By far, the best run into Northern Italy is from Zurich to Milano Centrale. In fact, there is a train station under the Zurich airport and you can make the run in just over 4hrs with one train change at Zurich HB (main station) which is a 10min ride from the airport. 2nd class fare is 138CHF. 1st class fare is 224CHF. The 2nd class ride is very comfortable. 1st class provides wider seats and more shoulder/arm room. Maybe a tad more leg room. From Milano Centrale, you have dozens of places to go. If you try to go from Zurich to Turin or Genoa, they will route you through Milano Centrale first anyway. The CT is a 3.5hr ride from Milano Centrale. During the summer, it's packed with tourists. Still, walking around in the towns is very scenic. Food in many restaurants is great. In the opposite direction, 3.5hrs will get you to Venice. Slightly less time will get you to Bologna or Florence.
