Train travel in Germany (Bacharach)

On my trip this summer, I will be doing a little travel on my own in Germany and possibly the Netherlands. Does anyone know what websites to use to purchase tickets? I'm not planning on getting a pass for this section of my trip, as it will most likely be cheaper to do three days with point to point tickets. However, the Deutchebahn website seems really expensive, as does RailEurope. When I looked at the Austrian site for my Berlin to Vienna ticket, it seemed much more reasonable.

What I'm wanting to do is get from Amsterdam to Bacharach, then Bacharach to Berlin, then Berlin to Vienna (which I'll probably by through OERR).

Any thoughts?

Hi Cary,

I've had some good luck with Deutsche Bahn, but it can depend on when you are traveling. I found very reasonable priced tickets from Bacharach to Rotterdam for my trip in May - but I found the price difference can be more than 50% depending on how far in advance you are booking and what time of day you are traveling.

If you have some flexibility, it might be worth checking a few dates/times to see if a bargain turns up.

Good luck!

If you book far enough in advance (up to 92 days allowed) on the Deutsche Bahn site, you can get a Europa-Spezial Oesterreich Savings fare as low as €39 for Berlin-Vienna. Do the same for Amsterdam-Bacharach to get a Europa-Spezial Niederlande fare as low as €29. Do the same for Bacharach-Berlin to get a Sparpreis fare as low as €29. There is an alloted number of seats for each discount fare so book ASAP.

"the Deutchebahn website seems really expensive, as does RailEurope".

Even full fare on the German Rail website is less than RailEurope (depending on the routes, $497 from the Bahn, including optional reservations, vs $541 from RE with mandatory reservations, ), and DB has less expensive full fare connections (e.g., by IC) and a lot of discounted fares, neither of which RailEurope offers. You can get all three of those fares - Amsterdam to Bacharach, Bacharach to Berlin, and Berlin to Vienna from the DB website, and, as Tim pointed out, for far less than anywhere else.

And, BTW, it's ÖBB or OEBB, Österreichische Bundesbahn.
