we will be attending the passion play in Oberammergau and then would like to go by train to Salzburg for a couple of days. We then will rent a car to continue on-- most likely the romantic road--to Rothenburg and over to the Rhine valley. In looking at the Bahn.com site it says that it will take approx 4 hrs to get from Oberammergau to Salzburg. That seems like a long time. Is there a site to see what stops are made enroute? I have the feeling that we have to go back to Munich and then onto Salzburg. Does anyone know a better way? Maybe traveling down to Garmisch and getting a train from there as it is bigger town?? Thank you so much for your help. Steve, Steve, Lee, Tom and many more of you are a God send to us.
I also see the Bahn site that says it will take 4 hrs. from Oberammergau to Salzburg. That's going back through Munich which is about the fastest way. Unfortunately, the terrain between Oberammergau and Rosenheim is pretty rugged, and the trains run radially out from Munich rather than across it. There are buses, but they would take more time crossing this area than just going back to Munich. You could go to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and then go over the pass (Mittenwald, Seefeld) to Innsbruck and down the Inn to Rosenheim or around Berchtesgaden to Salzburg, but that would be even more time consuming.
Using this DB site for train schedules, http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en, enter your train info. On the list of available trains, click on the far left arrow to get a detailed schedule for the train you want to take. At the bottom of that schedule, you can click on another arrow to "show intermediate stops". There's even a map icon you can click on to show you your route. I take a copy of these detailed train schedules with me to not only purchase my tickets (show it at the ticket window) but also so I know when my stop is coming up. Have a great trip!
If you just looked at a map, you might be tempted to think you could just go straight across Bavaria from Murnau to Rosenheim, which is on the main line to Salzburg. However, that is a rather mountainous area, with north-south valleys. The train lines follow the valleys. There is, in fact, only about one major east-west road east of the main train line to Garmisch. It goes through Bad Tölz.
There are numerous buses in the the area, but they are regional buses, which make many stops. They are also short runs, with lots of changes.
You could go by train half way back to Munich, to Tutzing am Starnbergersee, the go south to Penzberg and take a bus from there to Bad Tölz and the train from there through Holzkirchen to Rosenheim, but that would take considerable longer than via Munich.
Last August, I went from Osterhofen, near Bayrischzell, to Mittenwald. My routing, either by train or bus, took me through Holzkirchen. From there I could go up to Munich and come out the main line via Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Mittenwald. It only took a little more time to go by train from Holzkirchen to Bad Tölz, then by bus via Kochelsee and Wallgau to Mittenwald, but I got to see an area not often seen by Americans.
