Train travel from Frankfurt to Trier

I was exploring anticipated costs for this trip to meet the GAS Tour on Sat 8/4/12. I assumed tickets could be purchased at the station the day we arrive (8/3) in Frankfurt or the next morning when we want to travel. I have seen quotes ranging from 39 Euros total for 2 adults, 2nd class with no seat reservation (bahn.de site) to $66/person (104 Euros) (raileurope.com site). Is the large difference because the "supersaver" rate is nonrefundable? Is it better to reserve now (and is the bahn.de site the best) or can I get the same lower price in person at the train station on 8/3 or 8/4/12? I know the specific train departure that we want for leaving Frankfurt on 8/4/12 at 9:42AM but could be flexible if there is a better deal.

The saver price tickets at the DB site are limited in number, so the price will go up as tickets sell. They are refundable with penalties. But then you'd need to buy a more expensive ticket. Since you know exactly when you're going and should have no trouble catching the train, why not buy the ticket? Don't put it off unless you want to pay more. If you are flying in on 8/3, I'd suggest heading to Mainz (only about 20 min. from FRA) instead of Frankfurt (which is in the wrong direction for a trip to Trier) for your first day/night, and buy a DB ticket from Mainz to Trier for 8/4. You can catch the 10:20 train that way and still arrive at 12:46 in Trier. And the Mainz-Trier ticket is only 29€ (now, anyway.)
