We will have a rental car but would prefer to trainin to Nuremburg. Is this doable and can we walk the city from the station if we do this? We will have rail passes

Yes. From the station in Nuremburg to downtown is an easy walk. From the train station you can also catch the tram to the Documentation Center. RS guidebook spells it out clearly.

Nan: If you have a railpass for a certain number of travel days within a month or two... St. Goar - Rothenburg is a lengthy trip and it makes sense to use a railpass day - it would cost a lot for regular tickets. Ansbach - Nuremberg, however, is a very short distance and it makes no sense to use a railpass day when a VGN "Tageticket Plus" daypass for two costs 16.20€: http://www.vgn.de/tickets/?Edition=en&p=1
