I am planning a trip- Flying into Frankfurt. Trip: 2 nights in Calw, Germany 2 nights in Colmar, France 2 nights in Interlaken, Switzerland 3 nights in Salzburg, Austria 2 nights in Munich I have read previous Bavaria posts. I read about the towns around Calw as well as the ones between Interlaken and Salzburg (Mittenwald...). Also, that it is possible to take a day tour to Hallstatt while in Salzburg. We were hoping to stop at the small towns between Munich and her home, such as Rothenburg and Marktbreit. Is the train a good way to travel on this trip or would a car be better?
Is it a lot more expensive because we will be traveling through 4 countries? Thanks! Janette
Calw (pr Kailf) is a pretty small town, but very picturesque. You might run out of things to do there, but if you get a Konus card, you'll have free use of the trains and buses. Just down the river by train from Calw is Hirsau, with a ruined abbey. Further down the river from there, Bad Liebenzell has a spa. I would check train connections before resorting to the hassle and expense of a car. The rail system in Germany is so extensive you probably won't need a car, but, depending on where you want to go, you might need one in the Alsace. Similarly, you can get to Hallstatt from Salzburg (I would recommend spending one night there rather than trying to see it in a day) by train, but the route is a little roundabout (through Attnang-Puchheim) so a car would be faster. In 2009, I used buses to get to Hallstatt through the Salzkammergut including a stopover in Mondsee (scene of the SOM wedding), but that was an all-day trip just to get to Hallstatt.
Thanks for your reply.
I hope to arrive in Frankfurt in the morning and get to Calw by early afternoon. I figured if we needed more to do there we could get transportation (the Black Forest double-decker train I saw posted on this site) to the surrounding towns, such as Bad Herrenalb, Bad Widbad,or Alpirsbach. The first day I'll probably be a little worse for wear due to the flight! Thanks again!
