Train to Normandy and then tour to see D Day beaches

WOuld rather take a train from Paris to Normandy and then find a good tour to join to see the D Day history. Was thinking of possibly renting a car and doing a self tour or is that not a good idea. Not interested in seeing any other sights. Can this be done in a day? or is it too much?

If you take a train, you will need to go the night before. The earliest train arrives in Bayeaux after the tours start.

In May 2010 we took the Link Paris tour. We left Paris at around 7:00 am and arrived by train in Caen where we met our tour guide. We toured the Caen War Memorial and then an 11 passenger van took us and our guide to Omaha Beach, Pont du Hoc, the American Cemetary and to some German bunkers. This tour was great for an overview. I know many people say it shouldn't be done in a day, but it was great for us. If you are interested in a more in depth lengthier tour this isn't a good fit. It was perfect for us because it fit our interest and we left Paris at 7:00 a.m. and returned by about 9:30 p.m. and did not have to change our Paris lodging arrangements.
