Train to Neuschwanstein

We are planning on taking the train from Munich down to see Neuschwanstein Castle at the end of May. We wanted to use the Bavaria Ticket, so it looks like we have to leave after 9:00am. The first train after leaves at 9:51, arriving at 11:55. What time should I reserve castle tickets for? Any other suggestions for this trip? Thanks!

First place, just because you are using a Bayern-Ticket doesn't mean that you can't start your travel before 9 AM workdays; you just have to have other ticket coverage before 9. The 8:52 train from Munich Hbf goes through Geltendorf, still in the MVV district, after 9, so 3 zone MVV single trip tickets (Einzelfahrkarten) from Munich Hbf to Geltendorf at €6,90 each will get you there, and a Bayern-Ticket will cover all your travel from there on.

That train gets to Füssen at 10:55. The bus meets you at the bus stop outside the station at 11:05 and gets to the Hohenschwangau bus stop, just down hill from the ticket kiosk, at 11:13. You should be able to get to the ticket kiosk by 11:30. After you pick up your tickets it is a long steep walk up to the castle - they generally say 30-45 minutes - so I think a tour time around 12:30 would be safe.

An MVV (Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund, Munich Metro) 3-zone Einzelfahrkarte, will take you from anywhere in the inner zone of Munich by Bus, U-Bahn, and/or S-Bahn to the Hauptbahnhof, or Pasing, and from there to Geltendorf, all for €6,90 pP.

If there are more than 2 adults, an MVV Partner Gesamtnetz Tageskarte (entire network day ticket) will work the same for up to five adults for €18,-.
