Four of us are spending 2 nights in Bacharach. We understand from our reading that it makes more sense to do the KD cruise to St. Goar, then take the train back. I've tried to find out how often they run, and where the stops are located with proximity to the dock. Would appreciate any feedback you might have....thank you!

Local trains run every hour or so. The docks and stations are separated by a short, easy walk in both towns. The following page can be used to find itineraries for Germany and all of Europe: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en Be informed that the section you've chosen covers very little of the river and takes only 40 minutes. You'd see a lot more castles and scenery if you began in Bingen, which is 11 minutes from Bacharach by train. The cruise would then be about 1.5 hours long. You could also start in Bacharach and continue to Boppard (1.5 hrs.) or Braubach (a 2-hr. trip) to see more - go to Braubach and you are at the home of an excellent castle - Marksburg, which has tours on the hour: www.marksburg.de If you'll be traveling around the area by train that day, you might want a Rheinland-Pfalz ticket, a daypass, 24 Euros for 2, for unlimited travel on the regional trains (good after 9 am weekdays.) http://www.vrminfo.de/en/tickets-and-fares/ticket-offers/rheinland-pfalz-ticket
I took the boat up the river from St. Goar to Bacharach, and it only goes 7 mph against the current. It goes so slow, and you see the same sights forever. By the time I got to Bacharach, I was very ready to get off. Going down the river is still less than 13 mph. Unless you know you really like cruising, I'd hate to commit to a long trip and get bored. However, if you do start by taking the train to Bingen, you should get a 20% discount on the boat ticket by showing your Bahn ticket at the Bingen K-D ticket kiosk. Also, there are two stations in Bingen, Bingen Stadtbahnhof and Bingen Hauptbahnhof. The K-D dock is near the Bingen Stadtbahnhof. It's a bit of a hike from Bingen Hbf to the docks, so make sure you get off at the Stadtbahnhof (as you come from Bacharach, it will be the second Bingen stop). Make sure in advance that the train you are on stops at the Stadtbahnhof. Both Bacharach and Bingen Stadt are very small stations and only served by the "milk run" MRB trains. It looks like any train that stops at Bacharach will stop at Bingen Stadt (after stopping at Bingen Hbf).
