Wondering if I am thinking about this right? Take a train from Munich to Budapest then Budapest to Vienna
Night train Vienna to Venice. I was originally thinking Munich to Vienna to Budapest to Venice, however after searching quite a bit, it seems any night train from Budapest to Venice would be very difficult (or as one person put it "a nightmare") Is that routing the best way, (even though we pass by Vienna on our way to Budapest, but then "track back" to get to Vienna, with night train to Venice?)
also - what train company does the Vienna to Venice, and do they have good service for a night train? (Sleepers?)
It is a Euronight, which sounds like Öbb to me. It will be either Öbb or FS (Trenitalia). You will find discussions about night trains elsewhere on the archives of this Helpline. I'm not sure I would want to be on a night train with 18 stops, doesn't even reach Salzburg until 1:30. Each time the train stops you will probably either wake up or half wake up, that is if you are asleep.
There is a direct night train from Budapest to Venice. According to the timetables on the German Rail site, it leaves Budapest-Keleti pu at 17:05 and arrives at Venezia Santa Lucia at 07:16 and makes over 30 stops. I have no idea what kind of service you will get on that train.
Take Unisom or Ambien.
Lisa, I agree with your first train routing...Munich to Budapest, for this leg take the Railjet train. For the second route I would choose this option: Budapest to Munich day on the Railjet direct, which is the quickest, then Munich to Venice direct on the CNL arriving at 0638. You have a lay over in Munich before taking this night train.
Lisa, We are going to be doing the same tour it seems....we (Carolina and I) are going to Munich, Salzburg, Prague, Venice, back to Munich at the end of this month! We would love to share advice and info about the region, its trains, and also how you decided on Budapest (instead of Prague?). I was hoping for Budapest myself b/c of the Danube and its history. Since we only have one week and Carolina wants to see Prague b/c it may be more modern, we chose Prague. What about you? Planning these types of trips is very important! Last year we went to Geneva and France (tour de france fans!) and have learned our lesson about planning, train hopping and car renting the hard way. Planning is very important; that way, there is no try, there is only do (as Yoda would say). Since Oktoberfest ends the first weekend in October, we decided to visit/tour Bavaria first, then to Prague from Salzburg, then from Prague to Venice via Vienna, so that would put us on the train from Venice back to Munich the day we fly out. We still don't have our schedule nailed down, but that is what we are thinking right now. Hope you have a good trip if we don't hear back-- so many things to do, so little time! -Chee
