Hi there, We are traveling from Interlaken to Cinque Terre, Italy on September 4. We have the Eurail Pass and I am making reservations for any trains that recommend doing so (or are required). When on the RailEurope website it tends to tell me that every train should have a reservation - which just leads me to believe they want to make extra $$. Shocker! That being said, can anyone tell me if there are any legs of that long trip that I should get a reservation for? It looks like it will be a four stop journey from Interlaken - Spiez - Milan - Genova - Sestri Levante - Riomaggiore (leaving 7:30am arriving 2:38pm). We could also do a route with one less stop, but it arrives one hour later as it has a stopover for 1.5 hours at one location. Your help is greatly appreciated! Thank you, Kirsten
Hi Kirsten. For the trains within Italy, find them on trenitalia.com. If it is a 'Regionale' train, you don't need a reservation; anything else (e.g. Intercity, Frecciaxxxx), a reservation is required. Enjoy your trip!
All trains in Italy except the Regional trains require a reservation. Regional trains are strictly get on and go. No reservations at any time so if a seat is not available you stand until one becomes available.
Rail Europe won't give you the full poop. Use the Bahn website and it will tell you everything. Put in your trip, and when the choices come up click on the red ">" symbol for detail. Look to the right where it shows what amenities are on each segment. If it says "Subject to compulsory reservation" then that particular train does require them. If not, they aren't.
