I need some quick advice regarding train travel. My son will fly into Zurich (because of a great airfare) early July for his study abroad experience. He will study in Belgium but would like to go early to France for a few days before the program starts, then will fly out of Zurich in mid August. Would a railpass be the best? The point to point seems high from Zurich to Paris. The railpasses seem so much easier and permit flexibility since he will need 2 long segments. I've been researching this but we must make a decision tonight as to how early he will leave to explore before the trip. Any advice is appreciated!
I'm probably not answering your question, but I should point out that in Belgium, he will be eligible for a student rate pass on NMBS and, if he's studying in Flanders (Leuven, perhaps?), he can get also get a reduced price for a pass on the bus/tram service, De Lijn. The system in Wallonia, TEC, probably has a similar arrangement, but I don't know of any details.
Thanks for your help! Is the student rate pass on NMBS and other passes for travel in Belgium only? I read about a program for students where they buy 10 tickets and can travel throughout Belgium using these.
Yes, he will be at Leuven and the professors said the first thing they will do is get bikes. He's already planning to take the bike on the train to interesting locations and ride. Do you know if there is an extra charge for taking the bike?
It looks like this 3 country selectpass is the best option for days he will travel to France and Switzerland, especially when he arrives and departs Europe.
I'm not certain about the NMBS pass, but passes for De Lijn only work in Belgium, but it is also compatible with TEC.
As for bikes on the train... I don't think I've ever actually seen anyone with a bike on NMBS, but I'm sure it can be done. Many of the buses on De Lijn, however, do have bike racks on the front.
I'll PM you with some more information about biking in and around Leuven.
