Any opinions or flying or train to Nice, not really interested in a night train though.. this will be for july. Also, if train, suggestion on which site to use,, I can't rememeber where I got my ticket to Rouen last trip.
Hi Pat,
While I have not taken this particular route, I know that I would choose the train. My general "rule" is that if the train ride is under 6 hours, I take the train rather than fly and this route is under 6 hours. The ticket bought in advance is quite reasonable. In the past, I've used the tgv-europe.com site to buy tickets. I've indicated that I was from the UK and then selected to go to the tgv-europe site (if you select U.S. resident you get sent to Rail Europe but I'm not sure what happens for Canadians). I've printed the e-ticket at home. I do recall that tickets were quite a bargain purchasing in advance, but don't know when the advance purchase period begins.
We flew EasyJet from CDG to Nice. Tix prices based on demand. Check of their website indicates some days have flights for 37 Euro.
I'll add I'm probably biased against flights so I may not be the most objective person. I fly a lot for work and have had more than a fair share of flight delays, schlepping stuff through security, hanging out on those really uncomfortable chairs that seem to be required in airports, getting diverted due to a storm, etc. Anytime, I can avoid this risk, I do :). Not that trains don't have problems. I once spent a couple hours in the dark in a Eurostar train inside the channel tunnel due to a power outage on the French side. Another time, my Paris to London trip took 6 hours when the train ahead of mine derailed. But other than those trips, I really can't remember any other train trips where I was really significantly delayed. I can't say that about flying. In the end, I think it comes down to personal preferences.
