Has anyone taken the train from Montpellier to BArcelona? I keep trying to book a ticket but I am told there are no seats. This is for January. Any tips? With thanks

French trains go as far as to Port-Bou. From there you need to get a Spanish local train. Raileurope.com will certainly help you, but bookings for January are not open yet. (Not more than 60 days in advance, usually) SNCF website may permit you to buy a ticket 'till Portbou, but on the other hand it's a TER -train, so no need to book longtime in advance, in any case you won't have a named seat.

Kathryn, The reason you can't find trains for January is that new timetables will go into effect throughout most of Europe on 12 December and some national rail companies haven't uploaded theirs yet. To get complete timetables, go to the German Rail site, www.bahn.com/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml, and enter any date no later than 11 December. The current timetables and the new ones should be virtually identical.
