Train itinerary, Switzerland and Italy

This is my first time using the European train system. I am arriving in Zurich on Oct.12 and need to be in Florence on October 15,checking into a B&B in the Tuscan country. I want to rent a car in Lugano on October 15 and drive to the B&B in Italy. My desire is to take the train(s) from Zurich to Lugano using the "Golden Line". Is this possible to do in one day or is it advisable to spend the night along the way? If so, what city do you recommend?

1) How do I get help with the train tickets, for this part of my itinerary? What do I ask? Once again, I am not familiar with train planning or itinerary. I don't want to make a mistake because I have misjudged times going and coming.
2) Once I arrive in Florence, I will drive except for the day to Cinque Terre. I want to take the train from Florence to Cinque Terre. Is this a reasonable plan of action?
3) After 6 days in Florence area, I will travel to Venice for two days, park the car and stay at a pensione. I want to drive from Florence to Lugano on October 23, turn in the rental car and take a faster train up to Zurich. Can this be done in one day or is there a better plan? My plane leaves for the US on October 25.
ANY help, advice, constructive criticism will be much appreciated. Linda

You can use this website to answer at least some of your train travel questions (re schedules and times), but make sure you add to these station to station times the additional time getting to the station, waiting for the train, etc http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/enIt's not clear to me whether you intend to drive in and around Florence, if that's what you're intending, we'd like to make sure you're aware that 1) it's not necessary to drive around Florence, the historic center is relatively small and imminently walkable; and 2) many travelers reporting here have reported that they were blind-sided by difficult driving and parking situations in Florence (write back if you want more details on that).
