Train--Half pass.... How does it work?

Hi, I'm travelling to Switzerland next month and have been doing some research on the Half-pass. Seems that you can buy a pass (for a year) which gives you half price tickets for almost all trains in Switzerland. Seems like a good deal which makes me wonder if I understand it correctly.

Also, if the above statement is correct, is it also true that the cogways are half off as well? I ask b/c I'm planning on going up the the Jungfraujoch for a day.

If anyone has any info/pointers on this I would appreciate it.

One final question, when should I buy the half off tickets as well as the regular tickets (we have our trip planned out, but not to the hour).

Thanks in advance,
Rob

We bought Swiss 1/2 fare pass for our Switzerland stay. They are 99 CHF each (about $83) and they are good for 30 days (I'm looking at ours). You will have to write your name on the pass at the place of purchase. When you purchase tickets, they will say 1/2 on the ticket. The conductor will ask to see your 1/2 fare card on each journey and will often ask to see your passport to make sure that you are the person whose name is on the card. Yes, the 1/2 fare card is good on the cog train up to the Jungfraujoch and also the Glacier Express and the gondola up to the Shilthorn. Full fare up to the Jungfraujoch is $132. The trip takes 2hrs to go up and 2hrs to come down. Full fare up to the Shilthorn is $75. With your 1/2 fare pass, you do get a 50% discount (I'm looking at our tickets).

Larry, thats great news. That sounds like an awesome deal then. I'll definitely go that route. I didn't realize they had a month pass, all I saw was the yearly which was 150cf so that makes it even better. Again, thanks for the info!

If you go to www.sbb.ch they have all of the information on the various passes and discounts for the Swiss Transportation System. At the top of the page, which will come up in german, you will see the letters fr, it, and en. Click on the en to get the english site. Then at the bottom of the page is a link for Special Tickets for foreign guests. You will then see a "Swiss Card" which is CHF 178, and gives you a free trip to and from your destination in Switzerland, along with one-month of half-fare travel. Alternately, there is the "Swiss Half-Fare Card" which does not include the free trips on the first and last day in Switzerland. The half fare card that you saw for CHF 150 is one that people living in Switzerland, or that travel there often, use. I hope this helps, and gute reise!
