I will be in Zurich and wonder if it is possible to travel by train to Amsterdam to catch a 9pm flight to the UK.

There is a direct overnight train from Zuirch to Amsterdam journey time is 12 hours. More detail can be found at www.citynightline.ch

You have several daytime choices with discount fares being offered on some of them if you book well in advance (up to 90 days allowed) at www.bahn.de. If you book Zuerich-Frankfurt and Frankfurt-Amsterdam separately, you can get a Europa-Spezial Schweiz fare of 39€ for Zuerich-Frankfurt and a Europa-Spezial Niederlande fare of 39€ for Frankfurt-Amsterdam. Leave Zuerich at 08:02 and arrive in Frankfurt at 11:53. Leave Frankfurt at 13:28 and arrive in Amsterdam at 17:25.
Go to the Bahn site and click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner for English. After you get summary timetables for Zuerich-Amsterdam, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points. Then start over and enter the information separately for each leg. Look for the Savings fare column on the far right-hand side and click on "Check availability."
