Anyone know which connections to take from Bad Ischl?
According to the Swiss Rail site, there is frequent direct train service from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt. The trip takes just under half an hour.
www.bahn.de train oic546/rex3416 from vienna west which runs directly with no changes to hallstat. 9:44 from vienna to attnang pucheim then changes to rezx 3416 from their bad ischl 13:05, hallstat 13:27. this is a direct train but ask which car you should be in at vienna because the train splits in half at attnang pucheim.
Anne,
I believe that's on the route from Vienna to Salzburg, but you'll need to change trains in Attnang-Pucheim.
When you arrive at the small station in Hallstatt, you'll be able to see the incredible view of the town from across the lake. As I recall, Stefanie runs about every half hour and the fare is about €1 each way.
Happy travels!
I am not sure how much information Swiss Rail or Die Bahn give.
You might try the Austrian train website:
http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/query.exe/en
You can learn the price on the ÖBB site. Try changing "Products" to "Einfach raus - Ticket" to see if that is a better deal. It is a group ticket that works for 2-5 people for 28 euros.

I am planning a train trip to Austria myself. There are several very helpful, local experts on Tripadvisor Austria Forum that have lead me through the possibilities:
