I asked this question in the Italy section as well, but figure there may be knowledgable readers here that might be able to help. I'm planning travel from Venice Dec 4 and ultimately leaving from Munich on Dec 10. I'd like to travel by train from Venice to Basel (daytime for the scenery if the weather allows) and then after acouple of nights there, on to Strasbourg. From there on to Munich with the idea of visiting Christmas Markets.I have generally driven in Europe,but am planning to try trains this time. Any ideas how to accomplish this and wonder how long it takes to get to the mestre station in Venice? Thanks!

Last question first: Mestre is just on the mainland side of the railway causeway from Venice. If your in Venice proper, you'll be leaving from Venice Santa Lucia. All the trains to Basel will change in Milan. Basel to Strasbourg will use French trains, and trains to Munich will be DeutscheBahn.
