Thanks for all the suggestions on hotels in Salzburg... have any of you taken the train from Venice to Salzburg? & how long of a ride is it?

One daytime route is an express bus operated by Austrian Rail from Venice to Villach and a train from there to Salzburg. Total time is under 7 hours. Another daytime route is a train from Venice to Innsbruck and another train from there to Salzburg. Total time is 7 1/2 hours. There is a direct night train that departs at 21:05 and arrives at 04:09. For detailed timetables see the German Rail site.

It's pretty long - hubby and I did opposite - Salzburg to Venice we took the night train - left 12:30-1am, arrived around 7:30am if memory serves me...I'm not sure if there is a night train fr Venice to Salz, but with that long to spend on a train, it's nice to (kinda) sleep it away and wake up bright and early at your destination.
