I am trying to get from Paris to Prague. Any ideas what a train ticket would cost? How long the trip would take?
For schedules, go to the German Rail query page.
The fastest connection I see offhand is a 12 hr daytime connection via Frankfurt and Dresden. There are also connection of about 20 hrs using night trains.
For the Paris Dresden part of that trip, you can get advance purchase, non-refundable ticket from DB online for as low as €39 per person.
While I prefer trains to planes, in this case I'll suggest you consider flying on a budget airline. You can fly Paris Orly-Prague on Sky Europe for as low as €39 + fees.
However, if you decide to take the train, you can save a lot by booking in advance on the site Lee gave. You can get a Europa-Spezial Frankreich fare as low as €39 for a Paris-Mannheim ICE train and a Europa-Spezial Tschechien fare as low as €79 for a bunk in a six-person couchette or €89 for a bunk in a four-person couchette on the Mannheim-Praha CNL night train. Leave Paris at 19:05 and arrive in Praha at 10:52, a total travel time of just under 16 hours.
If that SkyEurope fare is available, take it now. Don't wait; it may go up. I would prefer saving time to see sights to taking the train. RR fare might be greater than that discount air fare.
Forget the cost; you won't even remember it a year from now; but you will remember what you saw in the time you saved by flying.
THANKS EVERYONE! I think the flight is my best option. Much appreciated.
You're welcome, Kim. Since you've decided to fly, here are some things to note about European budget airlines. Observe the luggage size and weight limits or you will pay a penalty. Most importantly, observe the strict check-in time deadline. If you don't have your boarding pass in hand when the deadline arrives, your ticket will be worthless and you'll have to buy a new ticket on a later flight at full fare.
