Train from Paris, France to Trier, Germany

My husband and I are planning to take a train from Paris to Trier in May of 2012. Do we need to book in advance from home or wait until we are in Paris? If we need to book in advance, how far ahead? Thanks!

I would not wait until you are in Europe. There are substantial discounts to be obtained online with non-refundable, advance purchase, discount tickets from the Bahn website. These tickets start at €29 pP, go on sale 92 days out and go up as the lower price ticket sell out. They can be purchased 3 days in advance, but the lowest priced tickets will not be available by then. If you wait, only €83 full fare tickets will be available.

Thanks Lee, that is just the kind of info we were looking for.

Just my two cents, I had always wanted to go to Trier, and I like Roman ruins. But when we went this summer, I found it good, but not worth a special trip. That is, we saw everything we wanted to see in a day-trip by car from Mulheim, where we stayed for three days of Mosel-ing. On the plus side, Trier won't be so overrun with tourists in May. So unless you are going there to (for example) begin a Moselle/Rhine excursion period, or to go on to the Romantic Road, I politely suggest you at least, consider, other train destinations. To the North, I prefer Aachen or Cologne, to the South, Luxembourg or Munich, to the East, Berlin, Dresden or Leipzig. I certainly wouldn't go on to Trier if you've never been to Brussels or Antwerp.

Tim, Actually we plan to go from Paris to Trier to join a RS GAS Tour. We thought about flying from Paris to Frankfurt and then taking the train from there, but decided it would be easier to just take the train direct from Paris to Trier. Thanks for your input! Teri
