Could have been either. The S-Bahn (S8) to Herrsching uses the main trunk line from Ostbahnhof to the Hauptbahnhof (Donnersbergerbruecke, actually), as do most S-Bahn. Marienplatz is also on that trunk. You can get on it anywhere between Leuchtenbergring and Pasing. When I went to Andechs in 2007, I got on the S-Bahn, then the S-5, I believe, at Ostbahnhof. BTW, this is the S-/U-Bahn network for Munich MVV. At the upper right corner the S8 goes to the airport; at the bottom left it goes to Herrsching. There is a bus from Herrsching to Andechs.
